WRITTEN PATTERN OF CAPRI RAFFIA BAG

MATERIALS

• 4 mm raffia ribbon (200 yards)
• 4.5 mm crochet hook
• leather handles
• tapestry needle
• stitch marker

Abbreviations:
sc = single crochet
st = stitch
sl st = slip stitch
yo = yarn over

Pattern notes:
– Please watch the video tutorial for detailed instructions on creating even fringe with slip stitch loops, finishing both pieces with a seamless join, sewing the two pieces together, and sewing on the handles.

CIRCLES (make 2)

• Make a magic ring:

• Round 1 = sc 6 in the ring.
• Round 2 = sc 2 in each st (12 sc), insert stitch marker in 1st sc.
• Round 3 = (sc 1 in next st, sc 2 in next st) 6 times (18 sc).
• Round 4 = (sc 1 in next 2 st, sc 2 in next st) 6 times (24 sc).
• Round 5 = (sc 1 in next 3 st, sc 2 in next st) 6 times (30 sc).
• Round 6 = (sc 1 in next 4 st, sc 2 in next st) 6 times (36 sc).
• Round 7 = (sc 1 in next 5 st, sc 2 in next st) 6 times (42 sc).
• Round 8 = (sc 1 in next 6 st, sc 2 in next st) 6 times (48 sc).
• Round 9 = (sc 1 in next 7 st, sc 2 in next st) 6 times (54 sc).
• Round 10 = (sc 1 in next 8 st, sc 2 in next st) 6 times (60 sc).
• Round 11 = (sc 1 in next 9 st, sc 2 in next st) 6 times (66 sc).
• Round 12 = (sc 1 in next 10 st, sc 2 in next st) 6 times (72 sc).
• Round 13 = (sc 1 in next 11 st, sc 2 in next st) 5 times, sc 1 in next 10 st (75 sc), sl st in next st, don’t cut off ribbon.

FRINGE

• Facing the wrong side of work:
• Step 1 = Place the ruler in front of the stitches to use as a loop gauge.
• Step 2 = Wrap the ribbon around the ruler from back to front, place it behind the hook.
• Step 3 = Insert hook in next st, yo, pull through st and loop on hook.
• Repeat steps 2-3, creating one loop around the ruler for each slip stitch.
• When a few loops are complete, carefully slide the ruler out, then repeat steps 1-3.
• Make the last sl st loop, inserting hook in the 1st st of the round.
• Leaving a long tail for stitching, cut off, on the right side of the work, pull the ribbon through the loop.
• Seamless join: With a tapestry needle and the ribbon tail, insert the needle under the horizontal loops of the stitch after the next stitch. Then insert the needle from front to back through the center of the last stitch where the tail originated. Pull gently to form a false stitch and create an invisible join.
• Cut through the loops at the center of the ruler edge to create fringe strands.

FINISHING

• With a tapestry needle and the long tail, sew the two pieces together with the right sides facing out, leaving an opening for the bag.
• Weave in all ends.
• Sew the handles onto the bag.
