Lion Brand Shawl in a Cake
This was a match made in heaven! I was asked to make a tutorial about how to crochet virus scarf by one of my dear YouTube friends.
And naturally, this pattern needs color variety, so looking for a yarn for the scarf, I found Lion Brand Shawl In a Cake. It’s a new yarn and the swirling colors are so inspiring! I’m a Libra and it’s hard for me to choose between so many gorgeous colors. But sometimes something catches my eye like nothing else, so here are my two favorites.
First is the purple-pink-yellow-orange cake called Community Coral. But I call it Sangria scarf and here is why:
When I look at these colors, they remind me of the most delicious Sangria drink I have tasted, and that was back in 2011 in Barcelona.
It was when I visited the famous Barrio Gotico (gothic quarter) of the city with my dear cousin that we randomly walked into this little gem of a bar called Q the Bar and found the best Sangria and Spanish tapas. The yarn has all the ingredients – the shades of red wine and orange slices. Cheers!
My second favorite Shawl in a Cake yarn is beige-blue-red-gray cake called Moonstone. This one has a thin silver string woven into the yarn to add a sparkly touch and I’m using it in my video tutorial. Imagine wearing this beauty over a light jacket and jeans!

Tammy ‘MummaBear’ Raine, thank you so much for easy to follow tutorial, I am lefthanded but find this tutorial easiest to understand. I am so excited to make my first virus shawl. The yarn you used is so pretty. Again thank you for teaching me. Hugs Tammy, Sydney Australia

Hi. I am not understanding this pattern. I have crocheted through 11 rounds, then repeat rounds 8-11. Since each row gets longer how do the instructions from rounds 8-11 work? Do you just start the round over until you reach the end of the row? How does that match up with the pattern? I would appreciate any help you can give. Thank you!
Hi Jeanne! Yes, you will need to repeat the pattern and increase the repetition on each round on both sides of the middle part. So when on round 8 you did 2 bigger holes (1st is 10 chains and 2nd 7 chains) and twice the 3 smaller 4-chain arches until you reached the middle part of 2 7-chain holes, then on round 12 you will do 3 bigger holes (1st 10 chains, 2nd and 3rd 7 chains) and also 3 times of smaller 4-chain arches. And on each round you will increase the number of holes and arches by one (on each side of middle part).
I hope this helps you! Please let me know if you have more questions, I will be happy to help the best I can!
Will you please share your final dimensions or how many repeats of the four rows you did? I am finishing up one ball and I already have more rows than show in your photos.
Hi Tracy! I repeated the pattern 13 times, so I have 13 sets of “eyes” (double holes) in the middle. I didn’t use the whole second cake but most of it. And my scarf measures about 49 inches on shorter side and about 67 inches on the long side. I hope this helps! Happy crocheting!
Thank you so much. That is exactly what I needed to know.
I am still not understanding how to increase the pattern-can someone please give specific instructions?
I am still not understanding how to increase each row. Could someone give me more specific instructions? Thanks!
Thank you for sharing this pattern. The video tutorial was very helpful and easy to follow.
After working the first 4 rows, I decided to watch the video. I’m glad I did because the written pattern does not say to turn your work after the chain three in row 2. You might want to update that.
Hi there,
As the scarf gets bigger, you simply repeat the *ch3, sk 2 dc, sc in next ch1 sp* 3 times, ch7, sk 4 dc, sc in next ch1 sc* sequence until you get to the middle, then you do your *ch7, sk 2 dc, sc in next ch1 sp* twice, then continue the first sequence on the other side until the end. Once you do it enough, you’ll be able to see where the ch7s go. Hope this helps, and good luck!
Thank you for posting this! I just started watching the Virus Shawl videos and writing down the pattern. I had gotten to step 6 when I decided to check a charity crochet group page on FB to see if anyone had posted the pattern and I found your link. You’ve given me back all that time! I can’t wait to make this.
Thank you so much, Sandy! I’m really glad to hear you find my tutorial helpful. It’s a beautiful shawl, have fun making it!
Hi Raine! So excited to have discovered your blog! Finally a site that makes learning to knit and crochet so fun and enjoyable! On behalf of all the creative guys out there…Thank you! You rock…Keep up the great work!! 😀🙌👍
Thank you, Jason! 😄😉
I’m so sorry, I still don’t understand how to increase in round 8 either. (I have ADD!!) I think if someone could please write out the specific pattern to the next round 8 (which stitches to repeat) I might understand.
I have done the 11 and back to eight and it dies not work out, do not understand how to add to these rows to make it work! Please type instructions for adding to rows!

Hi, did you repeat all 4 rows 8, 9, 10 and 11?
I just added virus scarf diagram and hopefully that helps!
I also recommend watching my video tutorial for extra instructions.
A very beautiful shawl. I am excited to get started on it.
This is a very difficult pattern. I am a seasoned crocheter, I am 82 and have crocheted since I was a little girl. The video helps a lot but I still end up with one hole in the center at the very beginning. The picture shows two holes.
Hi Arlene, I’m sorry to hear this is difficult. But you are correct, the first round does have only one hole in the center, not two like the following rounds.
Thank you so much for sharing-I’ve made one but with different yarn. I love the monotone colours😊. I have a question please. I want to make these as gifts but they are not very common in UK where I live, I have no idea how big I should make it to be a scarf in the way you have described (which is the way I want to wear mine). Can.you give me an idea on size/length from middle top to bottom please? Thank you
Hi Isabel, thank you for your note! My scarf measures 60 inches on the longest side of the triangle and 28 inches from beginning circle in the bottom to the top edge. And I made total of 14 repetitions of the pattern. I hope this helps you!
Hi Raine; I love this pattern, was looking on Pinterest for a shawl pattern to make with some fingering(2) yarn I purchased from Stylecraft in lovely fall colors. I’ have to admit after row 11 when the repeat of 8,9,10&11 instructed I had to look at the turtorial and then a light came on in my head and I’m on my way ! So far I’ve completed 8 repeats but have a ways to go as my yarn is very lightweight. Thank you for this pattern I am left handed but the instructions are read the same as a right handed crocher(?) would read them it’s just which hand you use 😄 this pattern fits right in with this pandemic we are experiencing- stay safe God Bless America!! Virginia
Thank you, Virginia! So glad to hear you like my tutorial and this pattern. You are right, it is fitting right now. Stay well too! All my best!
Thank you! I’m glad you liked my tutorial! Your Virus shawls look all beautiful!
