The project of crocheting the Square Basket came to me from my YouTube channel. Last year I created a tutorial to crochet round bowls and one my viewers asked in comments whether I could also crochet square basket. I love getting these ideas from my viewers because they are so inspiring and motivating to create new crochet tutorials. So here is my Square Basket.
Just a few days until Easter, it’s a perfect time to make some cute baskets for egg hunt or house decorations. Why not give it as a gift to your Easter brunch host. It’s easy to make the Square Basket in preferred size just by adding rounds to the base.
I recommend using sturdy T-shirt yarn to crochet the Square Basket because it helps to make a nicely shaped basket and I love the look of the even single crochet stitches.
Square Basket is one of the four patterns of my Easter Crochet Pattern bundle – check it out in my Etsy shop. Easter Crochet Pattern Bundle contains 4 crochet designs of easy skill level to help you decorate for Easter!

WRITTEN PATTERN OF SQUARE BASKET

I use Bernat Maker Home Dec yarn (red and cream colors) and crochet hook size 6mm. The basket measures about 4 inches on each side.
Abbreviations:
R = round
sc = single crochet
ch = chain
- R1 – with first color make a magic ring and the first stitch, then sc 5 into the ring. Take the hook out of the working loop and insert it from back to front through two horizontal loops of first sc and pull the working loop through. Pull the loop long enough to put the ring through it, tighten the loop (please see my video tutorial to see exactly how to join the ring seamlessly).
- R2 – insert hook through vertical loops of next sc, pull up a loop and make a stitch, sc 1 in same space. Sc 2 in each next sc (always insert hook through vertical loops of previous round sc). When you have 11 sc made, repeat the joining of round the same way as on first round. You now have 12 sc with horizontal loops.
- R3 – insert hook through vertical loops of next sc, pull up a loop and make a stitch, sc 1 in next sc, sc 3 in next sc, (sc 1 in each next 2 sc, sc 3 in next sc) three times, sc 1 in next sc, repeat the joining of ring as before.
- R4 – insert hook through vertical loops of next sc, pull up a loop and make a stitch, sc 1 in next sc, sc 3 in next sc, (sc 1 in each next 4 sc, sc 3 in next sc) three times, sc 1 in each next 2 sc, repeat the joining of round as before.
- R5 – insert hook through vertical loops of next sc, pull up a loop and make a stitch, sc 1 in each next 2 sc, sc 3 in next sc, (sc 1 in each next 6 sc, sc 3 in next sc) three times, sc 1 in each next 3 sc, repeat the joining of round as before.
- R6 – insert hook through vertical loops of next sc, pull up a loop and make a stitch, sc 1 in each next 2 sc, sc 2 in next sc, (sc 1 in each next 8 sc, sc 2 in next sc) three times, sc 1 in each next 5 sc, repeat the joining of round as before.
- R7 – insert hook through the back horizontal loop of next sc and the smaller loop behind it, pull up a loop and make a stitch, work 1 back loop sc in each stitch around. Always insert the hook through back loop only, and the smaller loop behind it. Repeat the joining of round as before.
- R8-12 – insert hook through vertical loops of next sc and sc 1 in each sc around. Always insert hook through vertical loops of previous round sc. Repeat the joining of round as before.
- R9-11 – join the second color with slip stitch and repeat round 8.
- Handle – locate 3 stitches in the middle of basket edge and slip stitch until the first sc. Ch 18 and slip stitch in 1st sc of the middle three on opposite side. Slip stitch also in 2nd middle three sc and sc 1 in each 18 ch. Slip stitch in 2nd middle three sc and also slip stitch in 3rd sc. Sc 1 in each sc on handle, slip in 3rd sc, fasten off.
