Classic Christmas Ornament is a great last-minute gift idea because it works up quickly and it’s not difficult to make.
Even if you don’t have plastic or glass balls at hand, you can use some old ornaments.
My ornament measures about 10 inches in diameter, 3.4 inches from top to bottom, so it’s good to find somewhat same size ball.
The Classic Christmas Ornament is worked in 3 steps starting with the bottom half and contrast color stripe. The upper half is made separately, then attached to lower part. Final step is to make and attach the hanging string.

I use Aunt Lydia’s crochet thread size 10 – red and green as main colors, and Metallic white as contrast color. The gold ball is made with Metallic gold and white.
Crochet hook is size 1.75 mm. And you will need medium size plastic or glass ball, about 10 inches in circumference.
Abbreviations: ch = chain dc = double crochet sl st = slip stitch sc = single crochet hdc = half double crochet beg = beginning dc2tog = double crochet 2 together
- With main color make a magic ring.
- Round 1 – ch3, dc 25 in the ring (26 dc), sl st in 3rd beg ch.
- Round 2 – ch 1, sc in same stitch, *ch 3, skip 1 sc, sc in next sc, repeat from*, instead of last 3 ch end the round with 1 ch and hdc in beg sc.
- Round 3 – ch 1, sc in same space, *ch 4, sc in next ch3-space, repeat from*, instead of last 4 ch end the round with 1 ch and dc in beg sc.
- Round 4 – ch 1, sc 2 in same space, *ch 4, sc 2 in next ch3-space, repeat from*, instead of last 4 ch end the round with 1 ch and dc in beg sc.
- Round 5 – repeat round 4.
- Round 6 – ch 1, sc 2 in same space, *ch 5, sc 2 in next ch4-space, repeat from*, instead of last 5 ch end the round with 2 ch and dc in beg sc.
- Rounds 7-8 – repeat round 6.
- Round 9 – ch 1, sc 2 in same space, *ch 6, sc 2 in next ch5-space, repeat from*, instead of last 6 ch end the round with 3 ch and dc in beg sc.
- Round 10 – repeat round 9, end the round with 6 ch, sl st in beg sc, fasten off, cut off.
- Round 11 – join contrast color with sl st in any 3rd ch of ch6-space, ch 5, *sl st in next 3rd ch, ch 5, repeat from *, sl st in 1st sl st.
- Round 12 – ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), dc in 3rd ch of ch5-space, ch 2, *dc2tog with 1st dc in same space as last dc and 2nd dc in next sl st, ch 2, dc2tog with 1st dc in same space as last dc and 2nd dc in 3rd ch, ch 2, repeat from*, sl st in 3rd beg ch.
- Round 13 – ch 3, dc in next dc2tog, ch 2, *dc2tog with 1st dc in same space as last dc and 2nd dc in next dc2tog, ch 2, repeat from*, sl st in 3rd beg ch, fasten off, cut off.
- Top part – with main color ch 26, sl st in 1st ch to make a ring.
- Round 1 – ch 1, sc 1 in each ch (26 sc).
- Round 2 – ch 1, sc in same stitch, *ch 4, skip 1 sc, sc in next sc, repeat from*, instead of last 4 ch end the round with 1 ch and dc in beg sc.
- Round 3 – ch 1, sc in same space, *ch 4, sc in next ch4-space, repeat from*, instead of last 4 ch end the round with 1 ch and dc in beg sc.
- Round 4 – ch 1, sc 2 in same space, *ch 4, sc 2 in next ch4-space, repeat from*, instead of last 4 ch end the round with 1 ch and dc in beg sc.
- Round 5 – ch 1, sc 2 in same space, *ch 5, sc in next ch4-space, repeat from*, instead of last 5 ch end the round with 2 ch and dc in beg sc.
- Round 6 – ch 1, sc 2 in same space, *ch 5, sc in next ch5-space, repeat from*, instead of last 5 ch end the round with 2 ch and dc in beg sc.
- Round 7 – repeat round 6.
- Round 8 – ch 1, sc 2 in same space, *ch 6, sc 2 in next ch5-space, repeat from*, instead of last 6 ch end the round with 3 ch and dc in beg sc.
- Weave in all ends.
- Round 9 – ch 1, sc 2 in same space, *ch 3 sl st in corresponding dc2tog on round 13 (make sure the slip stitches on round 11 and current round align), *ch 3, sc 2 in next ch6-space, ch 3, skip next dc2tog on round 13, sl st in next dc2tog, repeat from*
- When you are about half round done, insert the ball and continue with round 9, sl st in beg sc, fasten off, cut off.
- Hanging string – with contrast color ch 45 and sl st in 1st ch, fasten off, cut off.
- Weave in ends and attach the string with a knot to ball’s ring.
