Crochet tips

Crochet tips

BLOCKING CROCHET

I recommend blocking doilies and table runners after you finish them. Make the piece wet, stretch it out on blocking mats and attach it with pins. Spraying some starch will give it extra firm shape. Let it dry completely before removing the pins.

EXPERIMENT

Feel free to experiment with different sizes of thread/yarn and hooks. The finished size of the item depends a lot on your crochet technique. Adjustments of patterns like adding or skipping rows/rounds are encouraged to reflect your own style.

HOOK SIZE

I recommend using the hook size suggested in the pattern but if your work is too tight, choose a larger hook, or if your work is too loose, choose a smaller hook. Don’t change the hook in the middle of project.

SKILL LEVEL

Basic: Projects using basic stitches.

Easy: Projects may include simple stitch patterns, color work and shaping.

Intermediate: Projects may include moderately challenging stitch patterns, color work and shaping.

Complex: Projects may include complex stitch patterns, color work and shaping using variety of techniques and stitches simultaneously.

WEAVING IN ENDS

When you are finished with your piece, use the sewing needle or fine tapestry needle to weave in thread inserting needle in and out of any stitches of same color. I recommend making a few stitches in opposite direction to secure the ends before cutting the tails.

YARN SUBSTITUTION

Whenever you want to use a different yarn from what is suggested in the pattern, check out this great source for yarn substitution.
