Trick-or-Treat Basket

October 20, 2026

What’s Halloween without a little yarn and a lot of candy? This Trick-or-Treat Basket crochet pattern is a fun way to get your hook ready for spooky season. Fill your crochet Halloween basket with candy for visiting ghosts and goblins, or take it along for a night of trick-or-treating. The base is reinforced with a plastic canvas circle to help the basket hold its shape and provide extra support for all those sweet treats.

Choose your favorite Halloween colors and follow along with the video tutorial and written pattern below to crochet your own Halloween basket. Just don’t blame me if a few pieces of candy disappear while you crochet!

VIDEO TUTORIAL OF TRICK-OR-TREAT BASKET

WRITTEN PATTERN OF TRICK-OR-TREAT BASKET

MATERIALS

  • Yarn: 250 yards of Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton, medium weight (4), in Goldenrod (Color 1) and 50 yards of Black (Color 2)
  • Thread: Aunt Lydia’s Metallic thread in Gold, held together with the cotton yarn (2 balls; 200 yards)
  • Crochet hooks: 4 mm and 2 mm
  • Round plastic canvas 5.75 inches
  • Stitch marker
Abbreviations:
sc = single crochet
inc = 2 sc in the same stitch
sc2tog = sc 2 together
ch = chain
sl st = slip stitch

Patter notes:
– The basket base and edge are worked in continuous rounds. Place a stitch marker in the first stitch of Round 2 and move it to the first stitch of each subsequent round.
– My plastic canvas circle has 122 holes around the outer edge. If yours has a different number, subtract 96 from that total to determine how many canvas holes to skip when attaching the 96 stitches of the crochet circle. Space the skipped holes evenly around the edge.

BASKET BASE
  • Make a magic ring:
  • Round 1: sc 8 in the ring. (8 sc)
  • Round 2: Inc in each stitch around. (16 sc)
  • Round 3: (Sc in next stitch, inc in next stitch) 8 times. (24 sc)
  • Round 4: (Sc in next 2 stitches, inc in next stitch) 8 times. (32 sc)
  • Round 5: (Sc in next 3 stitches, inc in next stitch) 8 times. (40 sc)
  • Round 6: (Sc in next 4 stitches, inc in next stitch) 8 times. (48 sc)
  • Round 7: (Sc in next 5 stitches, inc in next stitch) 8 times. (56 sc)
  • Round 8: (Sc in next 6 stitches, inc in next stitch) 8 times. (64 sc)
  • Round 9: (Sc in next 7 stitches, inc in next stitch) 8 times. (72 sc)
  • Round 10: (Sc in next 8 stitches, inc in next stitch) 8 times. (80 sc)
  • Round 11: (Sc in next 9 stitches, inc in next stitch) 8 times. (88 sc)
  • Round 12: (Sc in next 10 stitches, inc in next stitch) 8 times. (96 sc)
  • Round 13: Join the crochet circle to the plastic canvas, working through both layers: (sc in next 4 stitches, skip next canvas hole) 22 times, then (sc in next 2 stitches, skip next canvas hole) 4 times. Skip canvas holes only; do not skip any crochet stitches. (96 sc)
BASKET BODY
  • Round 1: Sc in each stitch around. (96 sc)
  • Round 2: (Sc in next 11 stitches, inc in next stitch) 8 times. (104 sc)
  • Rounds 3–6: Sc in each stitch around. (104 sc)

Starting with Round 7, carry the unused color inside your stitches, crocheting over it until it is needed. Do this with both colors: carry Color 2 while working with Color 1, and carry Color 1 while working with Color 2.

Work all stitches within the 25-stitch chart using the knit stitch (waistcoat stitch).

Knit stitch: Insert your hook through the center of the V on the front of the next stitch, instead of under the two top loops. Yarn over and pull up a loop, then yarn over and pull through both loops on your hook. Keep your tension relaxed so the hook slides through easily.

  • Round 7 (Chart Row 1): With Color 1, sc in next 8 stitches; with Color 2, sc in next 3 stitches; with Color 1, sc in next 3 stitches; with Color 2, sc in next 3 stitches; with Color 1, sc to end of round. (104 sc)
  • Round 8 (Chart Row 2): C1 – 6 sc; C2 – 5 sc; C1 – 3 sc; C2 – 5 sc; C1 – sc to end.
  • Round 9 (Chart Row 3): C1 – 4 sc; C2 – 7 sc; C1 – 3 sc; C2 – 7 sc; C1 – sc to end.
  • Round 10 (Chart Row 4): C1 – 3 sc; C2 – 19 sc; C1 – sc to end.
  • Round 11 (Chart Row 5): C1 – 2 sc; C2 – 21 sc; C1 – sc to end.
  • Round 12 (Chart Row 6): C1 – 2 sc; C2 – 4 sc; C1 – 3 sc; C2 – 7 sc; C1 – 3 sc; C2 – 4 sc; C1 – sc to end.
  • Round 13 (Chart Row 7): C1 – 1 sc; C2 – 5 sc; C1 – 3 sc; C2 – 7 sc; C1 – 3 sc; C2 – 5 sc; C1 – sc to end.
  • Round 14 (Chart Row 8): C2 – 4 sc; C1 – 17 sc; C2 – 4 sc; C1 – sc to end.

  • Round 19 (Chart Row 13): C1 – 11 sc; C2 – 3 sc; C1 – sc to end.
  • Round 20 (Chart Row 14): C2 – 8 sc; C1 – 4 sc; C2 – 1 sc; C1 – 4 sc; C2 – 8 sc; C1 – sc to end.

  • Ch 35, sl st in next marked stitch, sl st in next stitch.
  • Row 1: Turn, sc in each chain. (35 sc) Sl st in the sc where the starting chain is attached, sl st in next sc along the basket edge.
  • Rows 2–6: Turn, skip the 2 sl sts, sc in each stitch across. (35 sc) Sl st in the sc where the previous row began, sl st in next sc along the basket edge. On Row 6, finish with only 1 sl st in the sc below.
