How to crochet Teardrop Ornament

December 1, 2022

I have another Christmas tree ornament idea for you – let’s crochet the Teardrop Ornament. Please check out all my Christmas ornament patterns HERE.

The idea to crochet the Teardrop Ornament came to me when I crocheted the cute stuffed pumpkins this fall. The ornament is not big, about 8 inches in diameter, so it’s easy to stuff with fiberfill and quick to make for last-minute gifts.

The skill level is intermediate because the pattern requires quite a bit of multi-tasking. The Teardrop Ornament is made in amigurumi style (continuous rounds) with 2 colors of thread and it uses a few special stitches like “invisible single crochet decrease”.

I use Aunt Lydia’s crochet thread size 3 purple (color A) as my main color and two strands of metallic gold size 10 (color B) as my contrast color. Crochet hook is size 2.25 mm. My ornament measures about 5 inches in diameter and 3.5 inches from top to bottom.

Abbreviations:
sc = single crochet
A = color A
B = color B
ch = chain

Special stitches:
invisible single crochet decrease = insert hook through front loop of first stitch, insert through front loop of second stitch, (yarn over and pull through 2 loops) twice

Pattern notes:
You can skip one of the middle rounds (11 for example) for slightly smaller ornament.
  • With color A make a magic ring.
  • Round 1 = sc 6 in the ring.
  • Round 2 = insert hook in 1st sc, pull up a loop, make a slip knot with color B and pull it through 2 loops on hook, insert hook in same 1st sc, pull up a loop, yarn over with color A and pull it through 2 loops on hook, (insert hook in next sc, pull up a loop, yarn over with color B and pull it through 2 loops on hook, insert hook in same sc, pull up a loop, yarn over with color A and pull it through 2 loops on hook) 5 times (12 sc).
