I’m happy to share this new pattern and tutorial to crochet the Square Lace Doily.
This is a great pattern because it allows you to crochet any size of square. You can make small coasters, or medium size placemats, or even a large tablecloth. It’s easy to crochet and perfect if you enjoy working on repetitive pattern.

I always block my doilies to give them pretty shape. I make the doily wet, stretch it out on blocking mat, pin it and spray some starch for extra firmness. Here is how I blocked the square lace doily:

I use Aunt Lydia’s crochet thread size 10, colors Wood Violet and White. Crochet hook is size 1,75 mm. The doily shown here has 26 rounds including the edge and measures about 10″ on each side.
The doily looks really great using the finer thread size 20. Then the crochet hook is size 1,5 mm or 1,25 mm.
Abbreviations: R = round ch = chain sl st = slip stitch beg = beginning dc = double crochet sc = single crochet
- Ch 7 and sl st in 1st ch to make a ring.
- R1 – ch 3 and dc in the ring, ch 2, (dc2 + ch2) 7 times, sl st in 3rd beg ch.
- R2 – sl st in next dc and 2ch-space, ch3+dc+ch2+dc2 (beg corner), ch 1, *dc+ch3+dc in the next 2ch-space, ch 1, dc2+ch2+dc2 (next corner), ch 1, repeat from*, sl st in 3rd beg ch.
- R3 – sl st in next dc and 2ch-space, ch3+dc+ch2+dc2, ch 2, *dc 7 in next 3ch-space, ch 2, dc2+ch2+dc2, ch 2, repeat from*, sl st in 3rd beg ch.
- R4 – sl st in next dc and 2ch-space, ch3+dc+ch2+dc2, ch 3, *sc 1 in each next 7 dc, ch 3, dc2+ch2+dc2, ch 3, repeat from*, sl st in 3rd beg ch.
- R5 – sl st in next dc and 2ch-space, ch3+dc+ch2+dc2, ch 2, *dc+ch3+dc in 2nd ch of next 3ch-space, ch 2, skip next sc and sc 5, skip last sc, ch 2, dc+ch3+dc in 2nd ch of next 3ch-space, ch 2, dc2+ch2+dc2, ch 2, repeat from*, sl st in 3rd beg ch.
- R6 – sl st in next dc and 2ch-space, ch3+dc+ch2+dc2, ch 2, *dc 7, ch 3, skip next sc and sc 3, skip last sc, ch 3, dc 7, ch 2, dc2+ch2+dc2, ch 2, repeat from*, sl st in 3rd beg ch.
- R7 – sl st in next dc and 2ch-space, ch3+dc+ch2+dc2, ch 3, *sc 7, ch 5, sc 7, ch 3, dc2+ch2+dc2, ch 3, repeat from*, sl st in 3rd beg ch.
- R8 – sl st in next dc and 2ch-space, ch3+dc+ch2+dc2, ch 2, *dc+ch3+dc, ch 2, sc 5, ch 2, dc+ch3+dc, ch 2, sc 5, ch 2, dc+ch3+dc, ch 2, dc2+ch2+dc2, ch 2, repeat from*, sl st in 3rd beg ch.
- R9 – sl st in next dc and 2ch-space, ch3+dc+ch2+dc2, ch 2, *dc 7, ch 3, sc 3, ch 3, dc 7, ch 3, sc 3, ch 3, dc 7, ch 2, dc2+ch2+dc2, ch 2, repeat from*, sl st in 3rd beg ch.
- R10 – sl st in next dc and 2ch-space, ch3+dc+ch2+dc2, ch 3, *sc 7, ch 5, sc 7, ch 5, sc 7, ch 3, dc2+ch2+dc2, ch 3, repeat from*, sl st in 3rd beg ch.
- Repeat rounds 8, 9, 10 until you have the preferred size.
- Edge – if you use the same thread for the edge, ch 1 and sc 1 in same space where you did the last sl st, sc 1 in next dc, sc 3 in next 2ch-space, sc 1 in each next 2 dc, sc 2 in next 3ch-space, *sc 1 in next sc, (ch2+sc1) 6 times, ch 4, repeat from* until the next 3ch-space; in each corner: sc 2 in 3ch-space, sc 1 in each next 2 dc, sc 3 in 2ch-space, sc 1 in each next 2 dc, sc 2 in 3ch-space, repeat again from*, sl st in beg sc, fasten off.
