With this pattern of Star Stitch Fingerless Mittens I will show you my version of fingerless mittens and how to crochet them with pretty star stitches.
But first let’s find out why the fingerless mittens and gloves are popular?
During the middle of the 1980’s fingerless gloves started to become very fashionable. It’s thought they became very popular at around 1984, as a wide variety of pop and rock stars wore them as accessories. There was a time when fingerless gloves served a non-fashion related purpose, and they merely helped to keep the wearers hands warm, while enabling them to use their fingers with ease. But the 1980’s soon put pay to that as they were thrust into the spotlight and became a fashion accessory that anyone and everyone needed. The popularity of fingerless gloves didn’t really take off until well-known people started to wear them. Madonna for instance, was often seen to be wearing a pair of fingerless gloves. This meant fingerless gloves started to become very popular, and the demand for them grew and grew. As the ‘Retro’ look is getting more and more popular today, it won’t be long before we see more and more people wearing fingerless gloves that look good with just about any outfit.

I use Patons Classic Wool Roving, it’s bulky weight size 5 and one skein is enough. Crochet hook is size 7 mm. You will also need a stitch marker to keep track of the rounds on the cuff.
In case you want to use a different yarn, check out this great source for yarn substitution.
My mittens measure a little over 7 inches long, the cuff is appr 3,5 inches wide from side to side and the widest part below thumb hole is appr 4 inches wide. If you’d like to make wider mittens you will need to add 2 chains for each additional star.
Abbreviations: ch = chain sl st = slip stitch R = round sp = space beg = beginning
- Cuff: ch 22 and sl st in 1st ch to make a ring.
- R1 – sl st in upper loop of each ch around, 22 sl st, insert stitch marker in last st.
- R2-15 – sl st in upper (or back) loop of each st and move stitch marker to last st on each round.
