Dolphin Table Runner is a fun decor item to add the vibes of the beautiful ocean life to your home. It is made in filet crochet technique and it’s easy. You can add as many dolphins on your table runner as you like, I made three. And the white waves of the ocean are also easy to crochet for the edge of Dolphin Table Runner.
WHAT IS FILET CROCHET?
Filet means ‘net’ or ‘mesh’ in French. Using just chains and double crochet stitches and following the image chart it’s easy to do. You will find the full Dolphin chart below in the written pattern section.
Filet crochet consists of two types of blocks or squares making up the grid: open blocks are made with two chains and one double crochet, and solid blocks are made with three double crochet stitches. The first block on each row starts with additional double crochet but from there it’s either ch2+dc (open) or dc3 (solid).
BLOCKING TABLE RUNNER
The table runner definitely needs blocking after you finish it. I usually make the piece wet, stretch it out on blocking mats and attach it with pins. I also spray some starch to give it extra firm shape. Let it dry completely before removing the pins.

WRITTEN PATTERN OF DOLPHIN TABLE RUNNER
If you prefer ad-free printable PDF pattern, you can get it on:
To crochet the Dolphin Table Runner I use Golo’s crochet thread size 10 (Sky Blue = color A) and Aunt Lydia’s thread size 10 (white = color B) for the edge. Golo has 250 yards of thread in one ball and it’s enough for the table runner with 3 dolphins. Crochet hook is size 1.75 mm. My table runner measures about 18 inches long and 7 inches wide.
Abbreviations: ch = chain dc = double crochet beg = beginning sl st = slip stitch sc = single crochet Pattern notes: With asymmetrical pattern like the Dolphin you need to read the chart from right to left on each odd-numbered row (1,3,5,etc.) and from left to right on each even-numbered row (2,4,6,etc.).
- With color A ch 80.
- Row 1 = (read chart from right) dc in 8th ch from the hook (=beg open block), *ch 2, skip 2 ch, dc in next ch, repeat from* (25 open blocks).
- Row 2 = (read chart from left) ch 5 and turn, dc in next dc (=beg open block), *ch 2 and dc in next dc, repeat from*, finish the row with last dc in 3rd ch of beg 8-ch (25 open blocks).
- Row 3 = ch 5 and turn, dc in next dc, *ch 2 and dc in next dc, repeat from* and make 12 open blocks, dc 2 in next ch2-space, dc in next dc (=1 solid block), *ch 2 and dc in next dc, repeat from* and make 12 open blocks, finish the row with last dc in 3rd ch of beg 5-ch.
- Row 4 = ch 5 and turn, dc in next dc, *ch 2 and dc in next dc, repeat from* and make total of 12 open blocks including beg open block, next 2 solid blocks: dc 1 in each next 3 dc (=1 solid block), dc 2 in next ch2-space, dc in next dc (=1 solid block), next 8 open blocks: ch 2 and dc in next dc, next 1 solid block: dc 2 in next ch2-space, dc in next dc, next 2 open blocks: ch 2 and dc in next dc, finish the row with last dc in 3rd ch of beg 5-ch.
- Row 5 = ch 5 and turn, dc in next dc, ch 2 and dc in next dc (=2 open blocks), next 3 solid blocks: dc 1 in each next 3 dc (=1 solid block), (dc 2 in next ch2-space, dc in next dc) twice for 2 solid blocks, next 5 open blocks: ch 2 and dc in next dc, next 2 solid blocks: dc 2 in next ch2-space, dc in next dc (=1 solid block), dc 1 in each next 3 dc (=1 solid block), next 13 open blocks: ch 2 and dc in next dc, finish the row with last dc in 3rd ch of beg 5-ch.
- Row 6 = ch 5 and turn, dc in next dc, *ch 2 and dc in next dc, repeat from* and make total of 13 open blocks including beg open block, next 4 solid blocks: dc 1 in each next 6 dc (=2 solid blocks), (dc 2 in next ch2-space, dc in next dc) twice (=2 solid blocks), next 1 open block: ch 2 and dc in next dc, next 4 solid blocks: (dc 2 in next ch2-space, dc in next dc) twice (=2 solid blocks), dc 1 in each next 6 dc (=2 solid blocks), next 3 open blocks: ch 2, skip next 2 dc, dc in next dc (=1 open block), (ch 2 and dc in next dc) twice (=2 open blocks), finish the row with last dc in 3rd ch of beg 5-ch.
- Row 7 = 4 open blocks: ch 5 and turn, dc in next dc, (ch 2 and dc in next dc) twice (=3 open blocks), ch 2, skip next 2 dc, dc in next dc (=1 open block), next 7 solid blocks: dc 1 in each next 9 dc (=3 solid blocks), dc 2 in next ch2-space, dc in next dc (=1 solid block), dc 1 in each next 9 dc (=3 solid blocks), next 14 open blocks: ch 2, skip next 2 dc, dc in next dc (=1 open block), (ch 2 and dc in next dc) 13 open blocks, finish the row with last dc in 3rd ch of beg 5-ch.
- Row 8 = ch 5 and turn, dc in next dc, *ch 2 and dc in next dc, repeat from* and make total of 15 open blocks including beg open block, next 5 solid blocks: dc 1 in each next 15 dc, next 5 open blocks: ch 2, skip next 2 dc, dc in next dc (=1 open block), (ch 2 and dc in next dc) 4 open blocks, finish the row with last dc in 3rd ch of beg 5-ch.
- Row 9 = 6 open blocks: ch 5 and turn, dc in next dc, (ch 2 and dc in next dc) for 4 open blocks, ch 2, skip next 2 dc, dc in next dc (=1 open block), next 4 solid blocks: dc 1 in each next 12 dc, next 15 open blocks: ch 2 and dc in next dc, finish the row with last dc in 3rd ch of beg 5-ch.
- Row 10 = ch 5 and turn, dc in next dc, *ch 2 and dc in next dc, repeat from* and make total of 15 open blocks including beg open block, next 4 solid blocks: dc 1 in each next 12 dc, next 6 open blocks: ch 2 and dc in next dc, finish the row with last dc in 3rd ch of beg 5-ch.
- Row 11 = (starting and finishing each row same way) 5 open blocks, 6 solid blocks, 14 open blocks.
- Keep following the chart until 25 rows are completed.
- To start the 2nd dolphin in opposite direction follow the chart rows 26 – 48.
- If you’d like to add 3rd dolphin follow the chart rows 3 – 25.
- Fasten off, cut off color A.
- Edge round 1 = turn work sideways (working long side first) and join color B with sc in st after corner open block, *ch 4, skip 2 open blocks (OR skip next st), sc in next st, repeat from* until the end of long side, [turn work to crochet next side, ch 3, don’t skip next st but sc in it, *ch 4, skip 2 open blocks, sc in next st, repeat from* until the end of side] three times, turn work to first long side, ch 3, sl st in 1st sc.
- Edge round 2 = *sl st in next ch-space, ch 3, dc 3 in same space, repeat from* all around, sl st in 1st sl st.
- Fasten off, cut off color B.
- Weave in all ends, block the table runner.
