Celtic square doily is such a great piece of home decor because it fits so many different spaces like tables, desks and shelves. It makes a wonderful part of centerpiece on the dining table and it can even be used as a fancy placemat at that special dinner event.
This pattern is for intermediate skill level but beginners are welcome to make it as well to learn lots of different crochet stitches. Here are my doilies made with size 20 crochet thread:
The doily definitely needs blocking after you finish it. I usually make the doily wet, stretch it out on blocking mats and attach it with pins. I also spray some starch to give it extra firm shape. Let it dry completely before removing the pins.

VIDEO TUTORIAL OF CELTIC SQUARE DOILY
WRITTEN PATTERN OF CELTIC SQUARE DOILY
I use Aunt Lydia’s crochet thread size 10 and crochet hook 1.75 mm. The colors used in tutorial are Frosty Green, Natural and Taupe Clair. One ball of each is enough.
Special stitches: ch3-picot = ch 3 and sl st in stitch below
Abbreviations: ch = chain sl st = slip stitch sc = single crochet dc = double crochet beg = beginning dtr = double triple crochet tr = triple crochet trtr = triple treble crochet
- Ch 8, sl st in 1st ch to make a ring.
- Round 1 = ch 1, sc 18 in the ring, sl st in 1st sc.
- Round 2 = ch 16 (counts as 13 ch and 1st dc), dc in 4th ch from hook, dc 2 inserting hook under the long chain not in chains, ch3-picot, dc 4 also inserting hook under the chain not in the chains, (ch3-picot + dc4) 3 times, *skip 2 sc on round 1, sl st in next sc, ch 13, sl st in 3rd picot of previous curve, ch 3, dc 3, (ch3-picot + dc4) 4 times, repeat from*; on last curve make 3rd picot differently: ch 1, sl st in 14th ch of first curve, ch 1, finish picot with sl st, dc 4, ch3-picot, dc 4, sl st in beg stitch. Fasten off, cut off thread, even if using only one color..
- Round 3 = join thread with sc in 1st picot of any curve, *ch 17, sc in next 1st picot, repeat from*, sl st in beg sc.
- Round 4 = sl st in next ch, ch 4 (counts as 1st dc and 1 ch), *skip 1 stitch, dc in next ch, ch 1, repeat from*, sl st in beg 3rd ch. If you are using one color only, finish the round differently: instead of last 1 ch and sl st make hdc and sl st in 3rd beg ch because the next round has to start in space directly above sc on round 3.
- Round 5 = if you are using contrast colors like in my tutorial, join the main color in space directly above sc on round 3 and ch 3 (counts as 1st dc here and throughout), dc 3 in same space, ch 4, *skip 2 ch1-spaces, dc 4 in next ch1-space, ch 4, repeat from*, sl st in 3rd beg ch.
- Round 6 = ch 3, dc 1 in each next 3 dc, ch 5, *dc 1 in each next 4 dc, ch 5, repeat from*, sl st in 3rd beg ch.
- Round 7 = ch 3, dc 1 in each next 3 dc, ch 6, *dc 1 in each next 4 dc, ch 6, repeat from*, sl st in 3rd beg ch.
- Round 8 = ch 1, sc in same stitch, sc 1 in each next 3 dc, ch 9, *sc 1 in each next 4 dc, ch 9, repeat from*, sl st in beg sc.
- Round 9 = sl st in 2nd and 3rd sc, ch 1, sc in same stitch, in next ch9-space sc 4 + (ch3-picot + sc4) 3 times, *skip next 2 sc, sc 1 in 3rd sc, skip 4th sc, in next ch9-space sc 4 + (ch3-picot + sc4) 3 times, repeat from*, sl st in beg sc. Fasten off, cut off thread, even if using only one color.
- Round 10 = join thread with sc in any middle picot, ch 11, *sc in next middle picot, ch 11, repeat from*, sl st in beg sc.
- Round 11 = ch 4 (counts as 1st dc and 1 ch), *skip next stitch, dc in next ch, ch 1, repeat from*, sl st in 3rd beg ch.
- Round 12 =
- step 1 = ch 1, sc in same stitch, sc 1 in each ch1-space and dc, make total 24 sc
- step 2 = sc 25 more
- step 3 = ch 20, turn piece wrong side facing, count 13 sc back (including 1st sc where 20 ch started), sl st in 13th sc
- step 4 = ch 20, count 12 sc (starting with next sc from sl st = it’s the 1st sc of 25 on step 2), sl st in 12th sc
- step 5 = turn piece right side facing, in first ch20-space sc 8 + (ch3-picot + sc8) 3 times
- step 6 = in second ch20-space sc 8 + ch3-picot + sc 4
- step 7 = ch 20, turn piece wrong side facing, count 12 sc on first arch, sl st in 12th sc
- step 8 = turn piece right side facing, in 3rd ch20-space sc 8+ (ch3-picot + sc8) 3 times
- step 9 = continue in 2nd ch20-space, sc 4 + (ch3-picot + sc8) twice
- step 10 = sc in next ch1-space, sc in next dc, etc, make total 29 sc
- repeat steps 2-10 for all corners
- End the round with 5 sc in remaining stitches and spaces, sl st in beg sc.
- Round 13 side = if you use one color, sl st in next 2 sc / if you use 2 colors join the thread in 3rd sc (skip 1st and 2nd sc), ch 8 (counts as 1st dtr and 3 ch), *dtr in same stitch, ch 4, skip 6 sc, in next sc tr+ch3+tr, ch 4, skip 6 sc, in next sc tr+ch3+tr
- Round 13 corner = ch 10, count 12 sc on 1st corner arch and dc in 12th sc, ch 15, in middle picot on middle arch dc+ch7+dc, ch 15, count 8 sc on 2nd corner arch and dc in 8th sc, ch 10, skip 7 sc on main part after the arch, dtr in 8th sc, ch 3 and repeat side pattern from*

- Round 15 side = if you are using contrast colors, join the main color in ch1-space before beg 3 ch, ch 3, dc 3 in same space, ch 4, *skip 3 ch1-spaces, dc 4 in next ch1-space, ch 4, repeat from* until corner

- End the round with sl st in 3rd beg ch.
