Catherine Wheel crochet stitch creates a beautiful pattern for a blanket. And it’s easy enough to learn for any skill level. I love the look of wheels alternating in two contrast colors and the way the wheels fit perfectly with each other.
Catherine Wheel has many different meanings, so here are a few fun facts:
- It’s an older term for cartwheel in gymnastics.
- It’s a type of spinning fireworks. When ignited, it rotates quickly, producing a display of sparks and colored flame.
- It’s a circular window style in Gothic architecture.
So it’s not hard to see how the crochet stitch got its name.
Watch my video tutorial for step-by-step instructions to crochet the Catherine Wheel blanket. I have also included a written pattern below for details.

WRITTEN PATTERN OF CATHERINE WHEEL BLANKET
I used Bernat Blanket super bulky yarn for the blanket and I modified the standard Catherine Wheel stitch a little to fit that specific yarn type. So I would recommend using the same yarn (2 balls of each color, total 4 balls) and crochet hook size 8 mm or 9 mm.
Abbreviations:
sc = single crochet
ch = chain
dc = double crochet
yo = yarn over
R = round
- With color A chain 78
- R1 – sc 1 in 2nd ch from the hook, sc 1 in next ch. *Skip next 2 ch, dc 5 in next ch. Skip next 2 ch, sc 1 in each next 3 ch. Repeat from* to last 3 chains. Skip next 2 ch, dc 3 in last ch.
- R2 – join color B (don’t cut off color A) and ch 1, sc 1 in each next 2 dc. *Ch 2 and make 7dc-cluster (yo and pull up a loop in same stitch as last sc, then yo and pull through first 2 loops on hook, *yo and pull up a loop in next st, then yo and pull through first 2 loops on hook, repeat from* 5 more times, when you have 8 loops on hook, pull through them all), ch 3 and sc 1 in each next 3 dc. Repeat from* to last 3 stitches. Ch 2 and make 4dc-cluster starting in same stitch as last sc.
- R3 – with color B ch 3 and dc 2 in same space, *sc 1 in each next 3 sc, dc 5 in top of 7dc-cluster, repeat from* to last 2 sc. Sc 1 in each next 2 sc.
- R4 – join color A (don’t cut off color B) and ch 3, make 3dc-cluster inserting hook in 2nd sc of last row and in next 2 stitches. Ch 3 and sc 1 in each next 3 sc. *Ch 2 and make 7dc-cluster, ch 3 and sc 1 in each next 3 dc. Repeat from* to last 3 stitches. Ch 2 and make 4dc-cluster starting in same stitch as last sc.
- R5 – with color A repeat row 3.
- Repeat rows 2-5 until you have enough yarn left to crochet the edge but end with either row 2 or 4.
- Edge – sc across the longer edges of blanket, or around the whole edge. Fasten off.
