I hope you had a wonderful 4th July! Independence Day has passed but the long weekend is still here to start working on the red-white-blue C2C (corner to corner) Square Rug.
Lily Sugar’n Cream cotton collection has a yarn called Scrub Off and the self-striping Beach House has all the right colors for red-white-blue project. The yarn is a combination of classic soft and scrubby textured cotton and it’s mostly designed for making dishcloths. But I figured the C2C squares would create a pretty pattern, so you have a choice of making 4×4 C2C Square Rug or keep adding squares to make a blanket. The Scrub Off yarn is perfect for any of these projects.
And while crocheting the C2C squares you will also learn moss stitch. The Scrub Off yarn can be somewhat challenging to work with, especially when learning new skills, so I recommend practicing first with regular cotton yarn. That’s what I did!

If you prefer ad-free printable PDF pattern, you can get it on:
I use crochet hook size 5 mm and Lily Sugar’n Cream Scrub Off color Beach House (4 skeins, one for each square) and Sugar’n Cream regular cotton color Ecru for stitching and the edge. One square measures about 10,5 inches.
Abbreviations: ch = chain sl st = slip stitch sc = single crochet hdc = half double crochet
- Ch 3 and sl st in 1st ch to form a ring.
- Row 1 – ch 3 and turn, sc + ch + sc into the ring.
- Row 2 – ch 3 and turn, sc in the first 1ch-space (between first 2 sc), ch 1 and sc + ch + sc in 3ch-space.
- Row 3 – ch 3 and turn, sc in the first 1ch-space, ch 1 and sc in the next 1ch-space, ch 1 and sc + ch + sc in 3ch-space.
- Repeat the increasing pattern until you have 31 rows.
- The end of row 31 instead of sc + ch + sc in 3ch-space do this: sc and hdc in 3ch-space.
- Row 32 – ch 2 and turn, skip first 2 sc, sc in the next 1ch-space, repeat ch+sc into each 1ch-space. When you have last 2 spaces (1ch and 3ch) left, sc 1 in each (this is decreasing).
- Row 33 – ch 2 and turn, skip first 2 sc, sc in the next 1ch-space, repeat ch+sc into each 1ch-space. In 2 last spaces (1ch and 2ch) sc 1 in each.
- Repeat the decreasing pattern until you have 3 sc left on the row.
- Ch 2 and turn, skip first 2 sc and sc in the next 1ch-space and also sc in the last 2ch-space.
- Ch 1 and turn, sc in the last 2ch-space. Fasten off and weave in all ends.
- Stitch the four squares together. Place two squares next to each other on flat surface, using big tapestry needle weave in the yarn along one of the edges and start stitching from the top to bottom. Insert needle from front to back through uppermost space, turn it downwards and insert from back to front through the next space, then do the same on the other square and pull the thread tight. Repeat the x-stitches and please see the video for the technique.
- Edge row 1 – join Ecru yarn with sl st into one of the spaces on the edge. Sc into each space and sc 3 in each corner space.
- Edge row 2 – sl st into 1st sc, ch 1 and make another round of sc in each sc, and sc 3 in each corner sc. Sl st in the beginning ch, fasten off.
