My next crochet bag is inspired by my dear homeland Estonia. We have beautiful national colors and symbols that have inspired countless Estonian crafters to create amazing handmade items for many years. I got involved in tapestry crochet technique recently and thought it would make a cute little bag that I call Cornflower Bag.
I chose the colors to represent Estonian flag’s blue, black and white. And the blue flowers are Estonian national – cornflowers.
This flower pattern is mainly used in cross-stitch projects to adorn folk clothing, but I figured it would work just as well using tapestry crochet. The blue waves beneath the flowers remind me of the long coastline (2,352 miles) of Baltic Sea and Gulf of Finland along the tiny country.
Here is a little interpretation of Estonian flag colors by Estonian poet Martin Lipp (the last name Lipp means “flag” in Estonian):
The color blue represents loyalty, and the country’s beautiful blue skies, seas and lakes; black is symbolic of past oppression and the fertile soil, and white represents virtue, winter snows, and Estonia’s long struggle for freedom and independence.
