I have found so much inspiration from my Instagram maker friends this winter to crochet these wonderful winter hats. There’s abundance of beautiful crochet hats flowing through my feed each day, and I was really compelled to try some of them myself. Lot of them have links to patterns, so all I needed was to buy tons of great yarn and lots of cute faux fur pompoms. The colorful pompoms themselves are so inspirational, to find matching yarn and figure out which yarn works best. So here is my selection of crochet winter hats and I hope they are inspirational to you as well.
- Whispering Pines Hat by Brenda K.B. Anderson
This beautiful hat with pine trees is designed by Brenda K.B. Anderson. I used Lion Brand Coboo yarn which is a blend of cotton and bamboo. It was somewhat challenging to make the first one, keeping track with all the stitch markers and counting stitches, but I was very happy with the result and I have sold 3 of them already! The pattern is available to purchase on Interweave: https://www.interweave.com/product/whispering-pines-hat-crochet-pattern-download/
2. Candy Cane – Unicorn Hat by Raine
This one is my own design and I think the cheerful stripes make a cute hat for a child. I used Caron Simply Soft yarn and this is a great hat to crochet if you are up for somewhat more challenging work. You will practice front post double crochet stitches while changing contrast color yarn with each stitch! Find the free written pattern and video tutorial of this winter hat here: https://handmadebyraine.com/how-to-crochet-candy-cane-hat/
3. Pineapple Upside Down Hat by Anastasia Popova
I love the beret-style design of this hat, it’s really pretty using Bernat Classic Wool Roving or Patons Alpaca Blend. I learned to make a pompom with this hat as you see on the purple one. The pattern is designed by Anastasia Popova and the pattern is available to purchase on Interweave: https://www.interweave.com/product/pineapple-upside-down-hat/
4. Caron 5 Star Beanie by Yarnspirations
The ribbed brim and star stitches add so much texture to this hat, it is cozy warm even without lining! As the name suggests, Caron Simply Soft is the yarn for this hat. The pattern is free on Yarnspirations: https://www.yarnspirations.com/caron-5-star-beanie/CAC0116-004205M.html
5. Alpine stitch hat by Left in Knots
This pattern is great if you want to combine 2 or 3 colors. I used 2 colors Caron Simply Soft Gold and Tweeds Off White but check out the designer’s original slouchy hat in 3 colors, designed by Left in Knots, the pattern is free on: https://www.leftinknots.com/home/crochet-alpine-ridge-slouchy-hat
6. Divinity Beanie by PaigesPerfectPosies
This is one of my favorite patterns and I bought it from PaigesPerfectPosies Etsy shop. I had never crocheted this type of stitch before so it was a great learning experience. I love how the textured pattern makes a beautiful warm winter hat. I used Caron Simploy Soft Tweed Heather and the pattern is available to purchase on Etsy: https://www.etsy.com/listing/756693214/divinity-beanie-crochet-pattern
7. Chainlink Beanie by PaigesPerfectPosies
This hat was my first ever pattern testing! Paige from PaigesPerfectPosies invited crocheters on Instagram to test her new pattern and I was happy to report I had just bought her Divinity Beanie pattern from her Etsy shop, so I was eager to crochet more of her designs and Paige selected me to participate in testing. I used Lion Brand Wool-Ease Natural Heather and Patons Alpaca Blend Aquamarine. The pattern is available to purchase here: https://www.etsy.com/listing/760976592/chainlink-bundle-beanie-and-cowl-crochet
8. Isabel Hat by TheEasyDesign
I love the striped look of the Isabel hat, especially the bobbles between vertical stripes. Variegated yarn works really well with this design and the textured pattern makes a warm hat. I used Lion Brand Landscapes Boardwalk for the hat with blue pompom and Red Heart Super Saver Retro Sripes for the hat with white pompom. The hat is designed by TheEasyDesign and I purchased the pattern on Etsy: https://www.etsy.com/listing/677204069/easy-crochet-pattern-crochet-hat-isabel
9. Stepping Texture Hat by Yarnspirations
This is a cool pattern, different from all the others. It uses super bulky yarn Bernat Softee Chunky. The pattern is available for free on Yarnspirations: https://www.yarnspirations.com/bernat-stepping-texture-hat/BRC0116-003719M.html
10. Bead Sitch Hat by 5LittleMonsters
Here is another striped hat, they seem to be especially popular among crocheters. I used Red Heart Unforgettable Pearly yarn for the hat with white pompom and Red Heart Unforgettable Sugar Cane for the hat with pink pompom. The last one is one of my favorite hats I’ve made so far because it looks like a yummy fruitcake. And the good news is that the pattern is free on 5LittleMonsters.com: https://www.5littlemonsters.com/2018/01/bead-stitch-crochet-hat.html
11. My mix & match hat
And last but not least, here is my own version of the striped crochet winter hat. I took the skills and inspiration I got from making all the hats and came up with my own. The big dark blue faux fir pompom invited me to mix and match Caron Simply Soft Country Blue and Caron Simply Soft Speckle Blue Gingham. Like with most of the hats I started with ribbed brim and then worked the hat from the brim to the top using 3rd loop single crochet stitches for solid blue stripes and bobble stitches for speckled stripes.
