The Stained Glass Throw is an easy crochet pattern to make the stunning colorful square shaped blanket. It starts out as a square crochet motif using two yarns, and then simply adding rounds to make it your preferred size, you will end up with a much bigger square of the throw.
I recommend using multi-color yarn like Lion Brand Landscapes (Boardwalk in tutorial, or Desert Spring) with solid color as contrast (Caron Simply Soft white in tutorial, or black). This is the easiest way to get the stained glass effect, and also very convenient to finish the throw with just four ends to weave in, as we never cut off the yarn at the end of rounds.
In the tutorial I will show you how to change yarn at the end of each round to achieve the clean look on the backside.

Lion Brand Landscapes really is the perfect yarn for the Stained Glass Throw (medium weight 4) and the bright colors used in the tutorial are called Boardwalk (color A). Ball size is 100 g / 3.5 oz, 100 m / 109 yds and I used 5 balls for my throw, which measures about 41 inches on each side. For the contrast color I used Caron Simply Soft white 2 balls (color B). Ball size is 170 g / 6 oz, 288 m / 315 yds. Crochet hook is 5.5 mm.
Abbreviations:
ch = chain
tr = triple crochet
dc = double crochet
sl st = slip stitch
beg = beginning
yo = yarn over
sc = single crochet
Special stitch:
Drop dc = insert hook in space below previous row, pull up a loop to height of working row, yo and pull through first 2 loops, yo and pull through last 2 loops.
Pattern notes:
Don't cut off yarn at the end of rounds after switching colors.
- With color A make a magic ring:
- Round 1 = ch 4 (counts as 1st tr), dc 3 in the ring, (tr + dc3) three times in the ring, pull the ring tight, make a slip knot with color B, then take hook out of it, insert hook back in color A loop, then insert it in 4th beg ch, then insert through slip knot of color B and pull it through the loops on hook, don’t cut off color A.
- Round 2 = with color B ch, sc 2 in same st, sc in each next 3 dc, (sc 3 in tr, sc in each next 3 dc) three times, sc in 1st st and finish this sc with color A (=pull up loop with color B, then yo with color A and pull it through the loops on hook), sl st in 1st sc with color A, don’t cut off color B.
- Round 3 = with color A ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), dc 2 in same st, dc in each next 5 st, (dc 5 in next sc for corner, dc in each next 5 st) three times, dc 2 in 1st st, but with the 2nd dc join color B (=yo with color A, insert hook in 1st st, yo with both colors and pull them through, again yo with both colors and pull them through 2 loops on hook, leave color A on the back, yo with color B and pull it through the loops on hook), sl st in 3rd beg ch with color B.
- Round 4 = with color B ch, sc 2 in same st, sc in each next 4 dc, drop dc in next st, sc in each next 4 dc, (sc 3 for corner, sc in each next 4 dc, drop dc in next st, sc in each next 4 dc) three times, sc in 1st st and finish this sc with color A (same way as on round 2), sl st in 1st sc with color A.
- Round 5 = with color A ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), dc 2 in same st, dc in each next 11 st, (dc 5 in next sc for corner, dc in each next 11 st) three times, dc 2 in 1st st, but with the 2nd dc join color B (same way as on round 3), sl st in 3rd beg ch with color B.
- Round 6 = with color B ch, sc 2 in same st, sc in each next 4 dc, drop dc in next st, sc in each next 5 dc, drop dc in next st, sc in each next 4 dc, (sc 3 for corner, sc in each next 4 dc, drop dc in next st, sc in each next 5 dc, drop dc in next st, sc in each next 4 dc) three times, sc in 1st st and finish this sc with color A (same way as on round 2), sl st in 1st sc with color A.
- Round 7 = with color A ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), dc 2 in same st, dc in each next 17 st, (dc 5 in next sc for corner, dc in each next 17 st) three times, dc 2 in 1st st, but with the 2nd dc join color B (same way as on round 3), sl st in 3rd beg ch with color B.
- Round 8 = with color B ch, sc 2 in same st, sc in each next 4 dc, (drop dc in next st, sc in each next 5 dc) twice, drop dc in next st, sc in each next 4 dc, [sc 3 for corner, sc in each next 4 dc, (drop dc in next st, sc in each next 5 dc) twice, drop dc in next st, sc in each next 4 dc] three times, sc in 1st st and finish this sc with color A (same way as on round 2), sl st in 1st sc with color A.
- Repeat rounds 7 and 8 until preferred size of throw. Finish last round with color B, don’t join color A, instead cut it off.
- Border = with color B sc in each st and sc 3 in each corner st, sl st in 1st sc.
- Cut off color B, fasten off, weave in ends.
