Poinsettia Square

December 24, 2025

Continuing my Granny Square Showcase series, I’m excited to share the fourth design — the Poinsettia Square. Inspired by the iconic holiday flower, this square brings layered petals, beautiful texture, and a cozy seasonal feel to your crochet projects. It’s festive without being fussy, and elegant enough to use well beyond the holidays.

Whether you crochet it in classic Christmas reds and greens or soften it with creams, blush tones, or winter whites, the Poinsettia Square adds warmth and charm to any handmade piece.

About the Design

The Poinsettia Square is all about dimension. The petal-like stitches are worked in layers, creating a subtle three-dimensional effect that mimics the overlapping leaves of a real poinsettia. The square is finished with a clean, structured border that makes it easy to join with other granny squares.

Blocking Instructions

Blocking helps define the petals and keeps the square perfectly shaped.

  1. Lightly spray or soak your finished square with cool water.
  2. Lay it flat on a blocking board or foam mat.
  3. Pin each corner, gently shaping the petals so they sit evenly.
  4. Adjust the edges until the square is symmetrical.
  5. Allow to dry completely before unpinning.

This step really enhances the floral texture and gives your Poinsettia Square a polished, professional finish.

Crochet Project Ideas for the Poinsettia Square

Thanks to its festive yet classic look, this square works beautifully in many projects:

  • Holiday Blanket or Throw: Combine multiple Poinsettia Squares with neutral filler squares for a cozy Christmas heirloom.
  • Festive Pillow Covers: One square centered on a pillow makes a lovely seasonal accent.
  • Table Runner or Placemat Set: Perfect for adding handmade charm to your holiday table.
  • Wall Hanging or Wreath Accent: Join a few squares or frame a single one as seasonal décor.
  • Gift Package Embellishment: How about just making the flower part (rounds 1-8) and use it as a festive embellishment – simply stitch or glue it onto wrapped gifts, reusable fabric gift bags, or holiday cards for a beautiful handmade finishing touch.
