Waffle Stitch Cozy

Waffle Stitch Cozy

April 14, 2023

The Waffle Stitch Cozy design is inspired by my Waffle Pumpkin that I published last fall. Using the same waffle stitch the cozy pattern has a few less rounds to crochet but instead of one color we use two colors of thread to bring out the vertical stripes.

When you finish the cozy, you will find that it is quite stretchy, so you can fit different kinds of things in it, whether a little vase, a jar or a flower pot. My cozy measures about 3 inches from top to bottom and 3.5 inches in diameter.

I use Aunt Lydia’s crochet thread size 3, colors Silver (color A) and Plum (color B). One ball has 150 yds in it and it’s more than enough for the Waffle Stitch Cozy. Crochet hook is size 2 mm.

Abbreviations:
A = color A
B = color B
ch = chain
dc = double crochet
beg = beginning
sl st = slip stitch
fpdc = front post double crochet
yo = yarn over
bpdc = back post double crochet
sc = single crochet

Special stitches:
fpdc = yarn over, insert hook from front to back to front again around the post of next st, yarn over, pull the loop through st – 3 loops on hook, (yarn over and pull through 2 loops on hook) twice
bpdc = yarn over, insert hook from back to front to back again around the post of next st, yarn over, pull the loop through st – 3 loops on hook, (yarn over and pull through 2 loops on hook) twice
reverse sc = working from left to right (instead of usual direction) insert hook from front to back in next stitch to the right, yarn over, pull through the stitch, yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook
  • With color A make a magic ring:
  • Round 1 = ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), dc 11 in the ring (12 dc), sl st in 3rd beg ch.
  • Round 2 = ch 1, fpdc around the 3ch on previous round and finish it with color B (=start fpdc with color A, then yo with color B and pull it through last 2 loops of fpdc), *dc with color B in next dc and finish it with color A (=start dc with color B, then yo with color A and pull it through last 2 loops of dc), fpdc with color A around the post of same dc where you just made dc, finish it with color B, repeat from*, end the round with dc with color B and finish it with color A, sl st in 1st fpdc (24 st).
  • Round 3 = with A ch 1, fpdc in 1st fpdc and finish it with B, *dc with B in next dc, dc in next fpdc and finish it with A, fpdc with A around the post of same fpdc you just made dc, finish it with B, repeat from*, end the round with 2 dc with B and finish the 2nd dc with A, sl st in 1st fpdc (36 st).
  • Round 4 = with A ch 1, *fpdc 2 in fpdc and finish the 2nd fpdc with B, bpdc in each next 2 dc and finish the 2nd bpdc with A, repeat from*, sl st with A in 1st fpdc (48 st).
  • Round 5 = with A ch 1 *fpdc in 1st fpdc and finish it with B, dc in 2nd fpdc and finish it with A, fpdc in same fpdc and finish it with B, dc in each next 2 bpdc and finish the 2nd dc with A, repeat from*, sl st with A in 1st fpdc (60 st).
  • Round 6 = with A ch 1, *fpdc in fpdc and finish it with B, bpdc 2 in next dc and finish the 2nd bpdc with A, fpdc in fpdc and finish it with B, bpdc in each next 2 dc and finish the 2nd bpdc with A, repeat from*, sl st with A in 1st fpdc (72 st).
  • Round 7 = with A ch 1, *fpdc in fpdc and finish it with B, dc in each next 2 bpdc and finish the 2nd dc with A, repeat from*, sl st with A in 1st fpdc (72 st).
  • Round 8 = with A ch 1, *fpdc in fpdc and finish it with B, bpdc in each next 2 dc and finish the 2nd bpdc with A, repeat from*, sl st with A in 1st fpdc (72 st).
  • Rounds 9-17 = repeat rounds 7-8, 17th is round 7, cut off and fasten off color B.
  • Round 18 = with color A ch 1, reverse sc in each st, cut off and fasten off color A.
  • Weave in all ends.

HAPPY CROCHETING!
