Spiderweb tablemat

October 22, 2018

I have a perfect Halloween decoration idea – why don’t we continue the spiderweb theme and crochet a spiderweb tablemat. If you’re brave enough, you can place a few big spiders on mats like I did.

The pattern design is courtesy of Yarnspirations.

Last year I showed you how to crochet spiderweb mason jar covers to hold Halloween candles. You can find the video tutorial here Halloween crochet jars

The tablemats are fairly easy to crochet and you will learn a few special techniques like magic ring, reverse single crochet stitch and surface slip stitch.

For my spiderweb tablemat I use Caron Simply Soft orange, purple and black yarn. Crochet hook is size 4 mm. My tablemat measures about 15 inches in diameter.

Abbreviations:
ch = chain
hdc = half double crochet
sl st = slip stitch
beg = beginning
sc = single crochet
  • Round 1 – with color A and make a magic ring, ch 2 (counts as 1st hdc here and throughout), hdc 11 in the ring (12 hdc), sl st in 2nd beg ch. Pull the ring tight by yarn tail.
  • Round 2 – ch 2 and hdc in same st, hdc 2 in each hdc around (24 hdc), sl st in 2nd beg ch, don’t cut off color A.
  • Round 3 – join color B with slip knot in first st and sc 1 in each hdc (24 sc), sl st in 1st sc, don’t cut off color B.
  • Round 4 – join color A with slip st in first st and ch 2, hdc 1 in same st, hdc 1 in each next 2 sc, hdc 2 in next sc – increase in every 3rd sc (32 hdc), sl st in 2nd beg ch.
  • Round 5 – ch 3 and hdc in same st (1st V-stitch), hdc 1 in each next 3 hdc, *V-stitch (hdc+ch+hdc), hdc 1 in each next 3 hdc, repeat from* (8 V-stitches and 24 hdc), sl st in 2nd beg ch.
  • Round 6 – sl st in 1st V-st space, ch 3 and hdc in same sp, hdc 1 in each next 5 hdc, *V-st (hdc+ch+hdc) in next V-st sp, hdc 1 in each next 5 hdc, repeat from* (8 V-stitches and 40 hdc), sl st in 2nd beg ch.
  • Round 7 – join color B in same 2nd beg ch of last round and sc in same st, *sc in next V-st, skip next hdc, sc 1 in each next 6 hdc, repeat from*, (for last 6 sc-group sc 5 because 1st sc you started the round with counts as 6th sc) sl st in beg st and also sl st in next sc (so you can join color A in sc that was made in V-st space). (48 sc).
  • Round 8 – join color A with sl st, ch 3 and hdc in same st, hdc 1 in each next 6 sc, *V-st in next sc, hdc 1 in each next 6 sc, repeat from* (8 V-stitches, 48 hdc), sl st in 2nd beg ch.
  • Round 9 – sl st in 1st V-st space, ch 3 and hdc in same sp, hdc 1 in each next 8 hdc, *V-st in next sc, hdc 1 in each next 8 hdc, repeat from*, (8 V-stitches and 64 hdc) sl st in 2nd beg ch.
  • Round 10 – sl st in 1st V-st space, ch 3 and hdc in same sp, skip next hdc, hdc 1 in each next 9 hdc, *V-st in next sc, skip next hdc, hdc 1 in each next 9 hdc, repeat from*, (8 V-stitches and 72 hdc) sl st in 2nd beg ch.
  • Round 11 – sl st in 1st V-st space, ch 3 and hdc in same sp, hdc 1 in each next 11 hdc, *V-st in next sc, hdc 1 in each next 11 hdc, repeat from*, (8 V-stitches and 88 hdc), sl st in 2nd beg ch.
  • Round 12 – join color B in same 2nd beg ch of last round and sc in same sp, *sc in V-st, skip next hdc, sc 1 in each next 12 hdc, repeat from*, (for last 12 sc-group sc 11 because 1st sc you started the round with counts as 12th sc) sl st in beg st and also sl st in next sc (so you can join color A in sc that was made in V-st space). (96 sc).
  • Round 13 – join color A with sl st, ch 3 and hdc in same sp, hdc 1 in each next 12 sc, *V-st in next sc, hdc 1 in each next 12 sc, repeat from* (8 V-stitches and 96 hdc), sl st in 2nd beg ch.

  • Round 16 – sl st in 1st V-st space, ch 3 and hdc in same sp, skip next hdc, hdc 1 in each next 15 hdc, *V-st in next sc, skip next hdc, hdc 1 in each next 15 hdc, repeat from* (8 V-stitches and 120 hdc), sl st in 2nd beg ch.

  • Round 18 – join color B with sl st in same 2nd beg ch of last round and sc in same sp, *sc in V-st, skip next hdc, sc 1 in each next 17 hdc, repeat from*, (for last 17 sc-group sc 16 because 1st sc you started the round with counts as 17th sc) sl st in beg st and also sl st in next sc (so you can join color A in sc that was made in V-st space). (136 sc).
  • Round 19 – join color A with sl st, ch 3 and hdc in same sp, hdc 1 in each next 17 sc, *V-st in next sc, hdc 1 in each next 17 sc, repeat from* (8 V-stitches and 136 hdc), sl st in 2nd beg ch.

  • Round 23 – sl st in 1st V-st space, ch 3 and hdc in same sp, skip next hdc, hdc 1 in each next 21 hdc, *V-st in next sc, skip next hdc, hdc 1 in each next 21 hdc, repeat from* (8 V-stitches and 168 hdc), sl st in 2nd beg ch. Fasten off, cut off color A.
  • Round 24 – join color B and reverse sc in each hdc and V-st space, sl st in 1st st and fasten off.

Spiderweb stripes – join color B with sl knot in one of the V-st spaces right below last reverse sc round like this: pull the sl knot from back to front through the space, then yarn over reaching over the edge and pull through the loop on hook (please see the video for illustration) to make the joining stitch, lay the tablemat flat and start working towards the center hole. Insert hook through the V-st ch-space, yarn over and pull it through the space and also through the loop on hook, this is surface slip st. Continue until you reach the center hole, after last sl st fasten off and pull the yarn tail through the hole to the wrong side. Repeat for 8 stripes.

Happy crocheting!
