Why do I call my next market bag a Network Shopper? First, the checkered pattern of chain-spaces looks like a net, so in other words, this is a “network of chains”. And second, “shopper” is a cool alternative to “market bag”, so why not mix things up a bit.
This is an easy crochet project, I definitely recommend the Network Shopper pattern for beginner crocheters to learn stitches and make something practical at the same time!

I use Bernat Softee Baby Cotton yarn and the colors in tutorial are Blush (color A) and Feather Gray (color B). It is light weight size 3 and ball size is 4.2 oz, 254 yds. One ball of each color is enough. Crochet hook is 4 mm. And my shopper measures about 14 inches long and 14 inches wide.

Abbreviations:
ch = chain
sc = single crochet
sl st = slip stitch
dc = double crochet
spike = spike stitch
Special stitches:
spike stitch = insert hook in space below sc on previous round, yarn over, pull up long loop, yarn over, pull through 2 loops
- Bag base:
- with color A ch 5, sl st in 1st ch to make a ring.
- Round 1 – ch 1, (sc in the ring, ch 5) four times, sl st in 1st sc.
- Round 2 – sl st in next ch5-space, ch 1, sc in same space, (ch5+sc in same space) twice, ch 2, *in next ch5-space sc +(ch5+sc) twice, ch 2, repeat from*, sl st in 1st sc.
- Round 3 – sl st in next ch5-space, ch 1, in same space sc+ch5+sc, ch5, in next ch5-space sc+ch5+sc, ch 3, *in next ch5-space sc+ch5+sc, ch5, in next ch5-space sc+ch5+sc, ch 3, repeat from*, sl st in 1st sc.
- Round 4 – sl st in next ch5-space, ch 1, in same space sc+ch5+sc, ch5, sc in next ch5-space, ch5, in next ch5-space sc+ch5+sc, ch 4, *in next ch5-space sc+ch5+sc, ch5, sc in next ch5-space, ch5, in next ch5-space sc+ch5+sc, ch 4, repeat from*, sl st in 1st sc.

- Rounds 7-13 – repeat the last round while increasing the number of ch5-spaces, for example, on round 7 you will repeat (sc in next ch5-space, ch5) four times, on round 8 five times, etc.
- Bag body:
- Round 14 – sl st in next ch5-space, ch 1, in same space sc+ch5+sc, (ch5, sc in next ch5-space) five times, dc in next ch5-space, (in next ch5-space sc, ch5) five times, in next ch5-space sc+ch5+sc, ch 4, *in next ch5-space sc+ch5+sc, (ch5, sc in next ch5-space) five times, dc in next ch5-space, (in next ch5-space sc, ch5) five times, in next ch5-space sc+ch5+sc, ch 4, repeat from*, sl st in 1st sc.
- Round 15 – sl st in next ch5-space, ch 1, in same space sc+ch5+sc, (ch5, sc in next ch5-space) five times, dc in next dc, (in next ch5-space sc, ch5) five times, in next ch5-space sc+ch5+sc, ch 4, *in next ch5-space sc+ch5+sc, (ch5, sc in next ch5-space) five times, dc in next dc, (in next ch5-space sc, ch5) five times, in next ch5-space sc+ch5+sc, ch 4, repeat from*, sl st in 1st sc.
- Rounds 16-33 – repeat round 15. Cut off color A, fasten off.
- Edge and handles:
- Edge round 1 – join color B with sc in first ch5-space on last round, repeat round 15.
- Edge round 2 – sl st in next ch5-space, ch 1, in same space spike+ch5+spike, (ch5, spike in next ch5-space) five times, sc in next dc, (in next ch5-space spike, ch5) five times, in next ch5-space spike+ch5+spike, ch 4, *in next ch5-space spike+ch5+spike, (ch5, spike in next ch5-space) five times, sc in next dc, (in next ch5-space spike, ch5) five times, in next ch5-space spike+ch5+spike, ch 4, repeat from*, sl st in 1st spike.
- For handle ch 150, insert the chain through first ch5-space on last round and corresponding ch5-space on opposite side, sl st in 1st ch, cut off yarn, fasten off. Ch 150 for the 2nd handle and insert it through last ch5-space on last round and corresponding ch5-space on opposite side (= these are the corner ch5-spaces on either side of ch4). - Cut off color B, fasten off.
- Weave in all ends.
