Heart Coin Purse

February 14, 2023

Today is Valentine’s Day, so I invite you to crochet the cute Heart Coin Purse with me. It will make a nice gift for your loved one to put the Valentine’s surprises inside.

This Heart Coin Purse is interesting for two reasons. First, we will use the glass beads to create the heart image. And second, the beads are added on the wrong side of the purse, so we will turn the piece wrong side out when the piece is finished. I will also show you how to attach the frame to the purse.

Tip about the frame: the number of holes on your purse frame will determine the number of stitches you need for the purse. For example, my purse on the pictures has a frame with 46 holes. We need to have 2 additional stitches in both corners, so I need to add 4 to 46 = 50 stitches. So I always add at least 4 to the total number of frame holes.

I use Patons Grace cotton yarn, weight category light 3 / DK. The color in tutorial is Natural. Crochet hook is 3 mm. My purse measures about 3.5 inches wide and 3 inches tall. You will also need:

  • 48 glass beads size 6/0
  • 8.5cm/3.35-inch purse frame
  • crochet hook 3mm
  • tapestry needle
Abbreviations:
sc = single crochet
sl st = slip stitch
ch = chain

PURSE BASE

  • Use sewing needle to add 48 beads on the yarn.
  • Make a magic ring:
  • Round 1 = sc 5 in the ring, sl st in 1st sc.
  • Round 2 = ch 1, sc 2 in each sc (10 sc), sl st in 1st sc.
  • Round 3 = ch 1, sc 1 in first sc, sc 2 in next sc, *sc 1 in next sc, sc 2 in next sc, repeat from* (15 sc), sl st in 1st sc.
  • Round 4 = ch 1, *sc 1 in two sc, sc 2 in third sc, repeat from* (20 sc), sl st in 1st sc.
  • Round 5 = ch 1, *sc 1 in three sc, sc 2 in fourth sc, repeat from* (25 sc), sl st in 1st sc.
  • Round 6 = ch 1, *sc 1 in four sc, sc 2 in fifth sc, repeat from* (30 sc), sl st in 1st sc.
  • Round 7 = ch 1, *sc 1 in five sc, sc 2 in sixth sc, repeat from* (35 sc), sl st in 1st sc.
  • Round 8 = ch 1, *sc 1 in six sc, sc 2 in seventh sc, repeat from* (40 sc), sl st in 1st sc.
  • Round 9 = ch 1, *sc 1 in seven sc, sc 2 in eighth sc, repeat from* (45 sc), sl st in 1st sc.
  • Round 10 = ch 1, *sc 1 in eight sc, sc 2 in ninth sc, repeat from* (50 sc), sl st in 1st sc.

  • Rounds 13-16 = ch 1, sc in each sc, sl st in 1st sc. At the end of last round cut off yarn with 40-inch tail for stitching.

ATTACHING FRAME

  • Using the long tail and tapestry needle first insert needle from back to front through 1st st.
  • Place the frame behind last round stitches, insert needle from front to back through 1st st and 1st hole of frame, then insert needle from back to front through 2nd hold of frame and 2nd st, repeat stitches until the last hole on 1st side of frame.
  • Insert needle from front to back through next st, then back to front through next st (=2 stitches in corner).
  • Repeat second side of frame and second corner.
  • Stitch around the frame second time inserting needle in opposite direction = instead of front to back insert needle from back to front through 1st hole and 1st st, then front to back through 2nd st and 2nd hole, etc. Weave in the end.
