Gothic Doily

The Gothic Doily, designed by Elizabeth Hiddleson, is a unique blend of traditional crochet design and dark elegance, perfect for those who appreciate intricate and unconventional decor. Crocheted with fine thread and delicate lace pattern, the Gothic Doily features motifs inspired by Gothic architecture. The doily definitely needs blocking after you finish it. I usually make the doily wet, stretch it out on blocking mats and attach it with pins. I also spray some starch to give it extra firm shape. WRITTEN PATTERN OF GOTHIC DOILY

I use crochet thread size 10, Aunt Lydia’s Burgundy, about 300 yards are needed to crochet the Gothic Doily. Crochet hook is size 1.75 mm. My doily measures about 17 inches in diameter.

Abbreviations: 
ch = chain 
sl st = slip stitch 
dtr = double triple crochet
beg = beginning
sp = space
hdc = half double crochet
dc = double crochet  
dtr2-cl = 2 double triple crochet cluster
tr = triple crochet
dc4tog = double crochet 4 together
yo = yarn over

Special stitches: 
* double triple crochet = yo three times, insert hook in indicated st, yo and pull up a loop, (yo and pull through 2 loops) 4 times
* dtr2-cluster = (yo three times, insert hook in indicated st, yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull through 2 loops, yo and pull through 2 loops, yo and pull through 2 loops) twice, yarn over and pull through 3 loops on hook

Ch 6, sl st in 1st ch to make a ring.
Round 1 = ch 10 (counts as 1st dtr and 5ch), (dtr, ch 5) five times in the ring, sl st in 5th beg ch.
Round 2 = sl st in ch5-sp,
- ch 2 (counts as 1st hdc), dc 9 + hdc in same sp, hdc + dc 5 in next sp,
- ch 8, turn, sl st in 6th st of last hdc+9dc+hdc group, turn, hdc + dc 12 + hdc in ch8-sp, sl st in last dc of 5dc group,
- dc 4 + hdc in sp you started with hdc + 5dc,
- *hdc + dc 5 in next sp,
- ch 8, turn, sl st in st where you ended the last hdc+12dc+hdc petal, turn, hdc + dc 12 + hdc in ch8-sp, sl st in last dc of 5dc group,
- dc 4 + hdc in sp you started with hdc + 5dc,
- repeat from* three more times, after last 4dc and hdc: sl st in beg 2nd ch, sl st in next 5 dc,
- ch 8, turn, sl st in st where you ended the last hdc+12dc+hdc petal, turn, hdc + dc 12 + hdc in ch8-sp, sl st in st next to beg hdc.
Round 3 = sl st in hdc and in 2 dc, *sc in 4th st of the petal, (ch 4, skip 1 dc, sc in next dc) three times, ch 5, repeat from*, instead of last 5ch: ch 2 and dc in 1st sc.
Round 4 = ch, sc in same sp, ch 5, *sc in next ch-sp, ch 5, repeat from*, instead of last 5ch: ch 2 and dc in 1st sc.
Round 5 = ch 5 and dtr in next ch-sp (=beg dtr2-cl), ch 10, *dtr2-cl with 1st dtr in next sp and 2nd dtr in next sp, ch 10, repeat from* (12 dtr2-cl), sl st in 5th beg ch.
Round 6 = sl st in ch10-sp, ch 2 (counts as 1st hdc), dc 13 and hdc in same sp, *in next ch10-sp hdc + dc 13 + hdc, repeat from*, sl st in 2nd beg ch.
Round 7 = sl st in 3 dc, *sc in 5th st of hdc+13dc+hdc group, (ch 4, skip 1 dc, sc in next dc) three times, ch 5, repeat from*, instead of last 5ch: ch 2 and dc in 1st sc.
Round 8 = ch, sc in same sp, ch 5, *sc in next ch-sp, ch 5, repeat from*, instead of last 5ch: ch 2 and dc in 1st sc.
Round 9 = ch 5 and dtr in next ch-sp (=beg dtr2-cl), ch 9, *dtr2-cl with 1st dtr in next sp and 2nd dtr in next sp, ch 9, repeat from* (24 dtr2-cl), sl st in 5th beg ch.
