Bee Table Runner

August 22, 2024

Let’s crochet the delightful Bee Table Runner to add a touch of nature to your dining table! This buzzing crochet project is another easy one because we use the filet crochet technique to create the bee images and then add 3 rounds of border with contrast color threads.

WHAT IS FILET CROCHET?

Filet means ‘net’ or ‘mesh’ in French. Using just chains and double crochet stitches and following the image chart it’s easy to do. You will find the full Bee chart below in the written pattern section.

Filet crochet consists of two types of blocks or squares making up the grid: open blocks are made with two chains and one double crochet, and solid blocks are made with three double crochet stitches. The first block on each row starts with additional double crochet but from there it’s either ch2+dc (open) or dc3 (solid).

BLOCKING TABLE RUNNER

The table runner definitely needs blocking after you finish it. I usually make the piece wet, stretch it out on blocking mats and attach it with pins. I also spray some starch to give it extra firm shape. Let it dry completely before removing the pins.

I use crochet thread size 10 yellow (color A) for the image, and white (color B) and black (color C) for the border. For two bees I used about 150 grams of thread. Crochet hook is size 1.75 mm. My table runner measures about 18 inches long and 9 inches wide.

Abbreviations:
ch = chain
dc = double crochet
beg = beginning
sc = single crochet
sl st = slip stitch
dc3tog = double crochet 3 together
yo = yarn over

Special stitches:
dc3tog = (yo and insert hook in indicated stitch, pull up a loop, yo and pull through 1st two loops) three times, yo and pull through four loops.

Pattern notes:
- With asymmetrical pattern like the Bee you need to read the chart from right to left on each odd-numbered row (1,3,5,etc.) and from left to right on each even-numbered row (2,4,6,etc.).
- For the 3rd bee finish on row 59, make 5 row of open blocks and repeat rows 5-29, for the 4th bee repeat rows 35-59. (Between each bee make 5 rows of open blocks, in the beginning and end of table runner make 4 rows of open blocks).
  • With color A ch 98.
  • Row 1 = dc in 8th ch from the hook (=beg open block), *ch 2, skip 2 ch, dc in next ch, repeat from* (31 open blocks).
  • Row 2 = ch 5 and turn, dc in next dc (=beg open block), *ch 2 and dc in next dc, repeat from*, finish the row with last dc in 3rd ch from st (31 open blocks).
